The 'Vette Badge

Starting off the new year with little project that I did for my Brother-In-Law. He has a Corvette and has been fixing up his 1 car garage. He had painted the walls yellow with black trim to match his vette. My sister likes the colors because she is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. I thought this would be a neat project to do a time lapse video. The project took about 16 hours of prep, painting and cleanup. The video production took twice as long as I try to figure out Adobe Premiere Elements 9. (This program is not good if you have high blood pressure).

The badge and logo are about 7'-6" x 3'-0" and 7'-6"x12" respectively. I had a full size pattern printed that I used a low tech graphite transfer technique to transfer the design to the wall. This technique works be using a soft pencil to shade the area on the back side of the pattern. Then placing the pattern on the wall and tracing the pattern on the front transfers the graphite from the back to the wall surface. Due to the layering of the paint colors I had to roll up the pattern sheet and repeated this technique for each color.

I also tried using a paint sprayer for the first time. It worked pretty well for the black paint layer, but had to revert to the traditional paint roller for the reds. I used a painters tape called Frogtape, which worked pretty well. I did have issues when using the paint sprayer. The tape edges lifted due to the air pressure on the wall. The tape instructions, (yes tape has instructions) recommended allowing paint to dry for 3 days before applying the frogtape. This would be fine for a single color paint job, but not so useful with a project like this.I had to do a little touch up with a brush.

Here is the time lapse video I posted on YouTube. There is a 5-6 sec. blackout in this video at around 25 seconds in. The video will continue - I have just had enough of Premiere Elements 9 for right now, sorry.
